#176 JBL Synthesis 1400 Array: $11,500 per pair Discontinued eBay

Pros: A three-way JBL Synthesis floorstander with a 14-inch woofer and a large horn-loaded compression driver, for very high clean output, and deep bass in published measurements (49.1Hz at -3dB, about 29Hz at -10dB). It scores 5.08 on its own, strong for a horn speaker. Measured bass extension of 29.3Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Discontinued around 2007 and found only used. Directivity varies a lot (4.12dB), so room reflections sound different from the direct sound, and the measurement data is low quality.

Frequency Response

How the JBL Synthesis 1400 Array measures across the audible range. A flatter listening window (the sound arriving straight at you) is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. The estimated in-room response adds what a typical room does, and there a gentle, even tilt down toward the treble is ideal. Both curves are shifted so their 300 Hz to 3 kHz average sits at 0 dB.
