Short answer: the Zealot ZE21. It ranks #18 of 112 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 4.0/5, at $187.15; the ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #100, rated 2.2/5, and costs $199.99, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh.
The Zealot ZE21 is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. A rugged battery boombox with unusually deep bass, very long battery life, and stereo pairing for party scale sound. Its bass reaches about 36Hz before falling 10dB, against 58Hz for the ION Pathfinder 280. It links with other speakers (PartyAdd up to 100 speakers), which the ION Pathfinder 280 cannot. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the ION Pathfinder 280. The tradeoff: That deep-bass emphasis comes with a pronounced 60-110Hz kick-bass dip and over-loud 250-600Hz lower mids, which can make rock and pop sound hollow or boxy.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the longer-running choice. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 40 for the Zealot ZE21. The tradeoff: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the Zealot ZE21. It is rated higher for sound quality than the ION Pathfinder 280 and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.
