The Zealot ZE21 is the better-sounding, longer-running choice. A rugged battery boombox with unusually deep bass, very long battery life, and stereo pairing for party scale sound. It is rated for 40 hours of battery against 25 for the EcoXGear Defender. It links with other speakers (PartyAdd up to 100 speakers), which the EcoXGear Defender cannot. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the EcoXGear Defender. The catch: That deep-bass emphasis comes with a pronounced 60-110Hz kick-bass dip and over-loud 250-600Hz lower mids, which can make rock and pop sound hollow or boxy.
The EcoXGear Defender is the lighter pick. A rugged, floating waterproof speaker that gets very loud for its size, with a flashlight, bottle opener and power bank. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the Zealot ZE21 at 20.4 lbs (9.27 kg). The catch: Its single front-facing driver layout has narrow dispersion: clarity and detail drop noticeably when you move off-axis, and the soundstage is limited.
Buy the Zealot ZE21. It is rated higher for sound quality than the EcoXGear Defender and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.
