Short answer: the Sony ULT Field 1 if you want more features and battery life for a bit more money, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 if you want the smallest, cheapest option. The Sony ranks #95 and the Wonderboom 4 ranks #86 out of 150 medium portable speakers, a close finish, and the price gap between them is $78.01.
The Wonderboom 4’s case for itself is mostly its compact, floating design, and its own pros text names little beyond its small size. Its bass doesn’t reach as deep as top-ranked speakers and sounds a little thuddy, and apart from switching to USB-C charging, it isn’t much of an upgrade over the previous Wonderboom 3.
The Sony brings real functional advantages, even with its own tonal quirks. It’s rated IP67 and can survive drops and a meter of submersion, and with ULT bass-boost mode left off, real-world battery life runs past 28 hours, well beyond either speaker’s manufacturer-stated 12 to 14 hour figures. It can also stereo-pair with a second ULT Field 1 for true left-right separation, something the Wonderboom 4 can’t do. Sound-wise it has its own issue though: an upper-midrange peak paired with a rolled-off treble.
Feature-wise the Sony is the more complete package. It adds a companion app with EQ adjustment, a built-in microphone, AAC codec support alongside SBC, and Party Connect linking with up to 100 speakers, none of which the Wonderboom 4 offers.
Buy the Sony ULT Field 1 if the extra battery life, stereo pairing, and app-based EQ are worth the modest price premium to you.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 if you want the smallest and cheapest option and don’t need the Sony’s extra features.
