The Turtlebox’s replacement, the Turtlebox Gen 3, is rated 2.1/5 at $430.
Why pick the Turtlebox: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. Watch for: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
The Tribit Stormbox Blast is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a JBL Partybox 100. Its bass reaches about 43Hz before falling 10dB, against 65Hz for the Turtlebox. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox lacks. Watch for: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5kHz.
Buy the Tribit Stormbox Blast. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Turtlebox is discontinued.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Turtlebox Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.

Tribit Stormbox Blast: $199.99 Amazon eBay
Newer model: the Tribit Stormbox Blast 2, ranked lower, rated 3.8/5, released Oct 2024. It adds AAC. See every Tribit Stormbox generation.
Same family: the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 (smaller model, rated 4.5/5), the Tribit Stormbox Flow (smaller model, rated 3.5/5) and the Tribit Stormbox Pro (smaller model, rated 3.7/5).
Pros: Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a JBL Partybox 100. Quite neutral in the default and xbass modes, but try Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ for a slightly more neutral sound. Oluv has mentioned v3.5 now uses his EQ as the defaults and sounds extremely good. 2 different light modes or can be turned off. Measured bass extension of 43Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5kHz. Without the above EQ this speaker would rank around #4 in the rankings. The curved underside of the handle makes it a little harder to grip and can be uncomfortable to carry long distances.
