These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The Turtlebox Gen 3 ranks #67 of 72 boombox speakers by sound quality at $430; the JBL Partybox 310 ranks #3 of 46 party speakers by sound quality at $499.95.
What the Turtlebox Gen 3 gets right: A much smaller, lighter package for anyone who doesn’t need party-size output. The catch: it ranks near the bottom of the boombox class here.
On the JBL Partybox 310 side: The deepest bass of any battery-powered speaker, the most balanced sound in its class, a removable battery, and wheels and a handle for moving it around. The tradeoff: it’s very large, and JBL’s daisychain party mode only works with other JBL speakers.
Buy the Turtlebox Gen 3 at $430 if you want a boombox speaker. Buy the JBL Partybox 310 at $499.95 if you want a party speaker instead.
If sound quality matters at all to you, skip the Turtlebox Gen 3. It ranks near the bottom of the 72 boombox speakers, so look higher up the list instead.
If water resistance matters to you, the Turtlebox Gen 3 at IP67 (brief submersion) holds up far better than the JBL Partybox 310 at IPX4 (splashing).

The Two Speakers In Full
Turtlebox Gen 3: $430 Amazon
Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25+ hour battery life. USB-C charging and USB-C output charges other devices. True multi-speaker Party Mode added on top of stereo pairing, plus Bluetooth 5.4.
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. They pretty much lie about all their specs and sound horrible in all youtube sound samples. Will never hit its claimed 120db at a reasonable measuring distance. Putting your db meter right against the speaker doesn’t count, 1 meter distance is the standard. Barely any bass. Rattles at high volume. Looking at it, it appears to be a generic car 2-way 6x9 speaker in a plastic box.

JBL Partybox 310: $499.95 Discontinued Amazon
Pros: Absolute deepest bass of any battery powered speaker, most balanced sound in the class, handle and wheels are convenient. Increase treble one step in the app EQ to make it more neutral. Customizable color lighting modes. Very close to the 320 in terms of performance.
Cons: Very large. Note, JBL daisychain is not compatible with any other non-JBL speaker and is possibly a fully digital signal. Discontinued.
