Short answer: both are discontinued, so this only matters if you are buying used. Used, the Tribit Stormbox Micro is the better pick: it ranks #5 of 62 small speakers by sound quality (rated 4.3/5), against #53 (rated 2.5/5) for the Sony SRS-XB12. If you want one new, the Tribit Stormbox Micro 3 replaces the Tribit Stormbox Micro and is rated 4.2/5 at $49.98.

The Tribit Stormbox Micro is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. Quite neutral. Its bass reaches about 62Hz before falling 10dB, against 97Hz for the Sony SRS-XB12. Watch for: Gets murky and slightly sharp near max volume; boosted bass distorts when pushed loud.
The Sony SRS-XB12 is the longer-running option. A detachable strap hangs it from a bag or belt. It is rated for 16 hours of battery against 8 for the Tribit Stormbox Micro. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Tribit Stormbox Micro lacks. The catch: Muddy, with little bass and peaky treble.
Buy the Tribit Stormbox Micro only if you find one used in good condition; both are discontinued, and it is the better rated of the two. For a new speaker, buy the Tribit Stormbox Micro 3, which replaces the Tribit Stormbox Micro.

Tribit Stormbox Micro: $40 Discontinued eBay
Newer model: the Tribit Stormbox Micro 3, ranked lower, rated 4.2/5, released Apr 2026. See every Tribit Stormbox generation.
Pros: Quite neutral. Slight hollowness in the mids. Built in strap is super useful for attaching it to things. Highly recommend spending a little more on the Micro 2 which goes louder and deeper. To have it aimed directly at you unclip the strap and the speaker will sit upright with a slight lean back. Measured bass extension of 62Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Gets murky and slightly sharp near max volume; boosted bass distorts when pushed loud. Down-firing passive radiator needs a flat surface underneath or the bass gets muffled. Discontinued and no longer sold new; superseded by the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2.
