Short answer: the Tribit Stormbox Blast 2. It ranks #31 of 112 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 3.8/5, at $279.99. The ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #100, rated 2.2/5, at $199.99, $80 cheaper, a saving that is not big enough to make up the sound-quality gap.
The Tribit Stormbox Blast 2 is the better-sounding, deeper-bass choice. A big, waterproof party speaker with deep bass, very high volume, a 30 hour battery and two mic inputs. Its bass reaches about 40Hz before falling 10dB, against 58Hz for the ION Pathfinder 280. It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Pathfinder 280. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the ION Pathfinder 280 lacks. The tradeoff: Sounds quite muddy with the boosted lower and upper bass.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the longer-running option. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 30 for the Tribit Stormbox Blast 2. Watch for: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the Tribit Stormbox Blast 2. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $80 saving on the ION Pathfinder 280 is not enough to make up the difference.
