What the SVS Prime Bookshelf does well: Affordable bookshelf speakers with a sealed woofer compartment, wide even dispersion and reasonable sensitivity. The catch: A scooped mid-range paired with a boosted upper mid-range creates an audibly uneven tonal balance, and there’s an additional dip in the treble around 4-5kHz that reads as slightly tinny relative to the recessed mid-range.
The Philharmonic BMR (v1) is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. A large three way bookshelf speaker with a ribbon tweeter, flat response, broad coverage, and an unusually expansive midrange. Its bass reaches about 62Hz before falling 3dB, against 72Hz for the SVS Prime Bookshelf. The tradeoff: The measured 83dB sensitivity and roughly 4-ohm load demand meaningful external amplification.
Buy the SVS Prime Bookshelf if price matters most. For better sound quality, the Philharmonic BMR Monitor, the replacement for the discontinued Philharmonic BMR (v1), is rated higher but costs $2,200.
