The Soundcore Boom 3i is the better-sounding option. Looks to be designed as a direct competitor to the JBL Charge 5 with a very similar sound profile, warm tuned with boosted bass. It has an adjustable EQ, which the JBL Charge Essential lacks. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. Watch for: Not quite as good as a JBL Charge 5, doesn’t go quite as loud or sound quite as balanced, but very very close.
The case for the JBL Charge Essential: Doubles as a power bank. It links with other speakers (Connect+ up to 100 speakers), which the Soundcore Boom 3i cannot. Watch for: Less clarity than the JBL Flip 4, highs rolled off.
Buy the Soundcore Boom 3i. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the JBL Charge Essential is discontinued.
