The Turtlebox’s reputation rests more on ruggedness than sound. Our notes describe it as waterproof and crushproof with 25 hours of battery life, and it can pair with a second unit for stereo. But our notes are also blunt about its sound: barely any bass, rattling at high volume, and output that in real-world 1-meter measurements falls well short of its advertised specs, built around what looks like a generic automotive 6x9 speaker in a plastic housing. Its own later generations, the Gen 2 and Gen 3, sound basically identical, since Turtlebox’s updates added features rather than sound quality.
The Soundcore Boom 2 Plus has real, if modest, sound quality tradeoffs of its own. Our notes describe a warm tuning with rolled-off treble and some upper-bass boost, and bass that’s reasonably deep but not as deep as the top-ranked boombox speakers. It’s also notably lighter than most boombox-class speakers, and unlike the Turtlebox it includes an app with a custom EQ, party mode pairing, and a USB-C power bank function.
Buy the Soundcore Boom 2 Plus for meaningfully better sound quality, a lower price, and modern conveniences like an app and USB-C charging that the Turtlebox lacks entirely.
Buy the Turtlebox only if crush resistance and waterproofing genuinely outweigh sound quality for your use case, and even then check current generations before settling on the discontinued original.

Pros: Quite a bit lighter than most of the other boombox size speakers. This speaker will likely move up as we get a good EQ tune that makes it a lot more neutral. Measured bass extension of 39Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Warm tuning meaning a rolled off treble and some upper bass boost. Reasonably deep bass, but not as good as the top ranked.

Turtlebox: $329 Discontinued eBay
Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5.
Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
