Short answer: they sound essentially the same, so the decision comes down to availability and price. The Soundboks 4 ranks #6 of 14 party speakers at $1199, and the Soundboks 3 ranks #7 at $699, a 1-place gap that barely registers.
One note: the Soundboks 3 is discontinued, but it still ranks #7 of 14 battery-powered PA speakers by sound quality, ahead of most of what is still sold new, so it is worth considering used.
The two share the same core strengths and the same limitations. Our notes describe both as tied for the loudest battery-powered speaker in their class, with the same removable 40-hour battery and high-efficiency drivers that reach 2 to 3 times the volume of typical speakers at the same wattage. Both are also called out for the same shortcomings: still very large, not stereo, not as neutral or as deep on bass as the top Partyboxes, and both rely on an external power brick for charging. Every measured spec matches: 52Hz bass extension, 126dB max volume, IP65, and identical 34 lb weight.
The only real differences are generational polish, not sound. Both share the same 2x 10-inch woofer and compression tweeter layout, though the Soundboks 4 lists a slightly updated frequency response spec down to 40Hz. Otherwise this is the same speaker sold at two different points in time.
Buy the Soundboks 4 if you want current hardware backed by an active warranty and official support.
Buy the Soundboks 3 if you find one from resale stock at a meaningful discount and don’t mind that it’s no longer sold new, since it delivers effectively the same sound and feature set.
