Short answer: the Sony ULT Field 3 for better sound quality, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 for the lower price. The Sony XB33 ranks higher than the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 (#77 vs #109 of 175 medium speakers) but is discontinued. Its replacement, the Sony ULT Field 3, is rated 3.4/5 at $208; the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 is rated 2.9/5 at $74.50, $133.50 cheaper.
The Sony XB33 is the better-sounding, longer-running option. IP67 rated and lightweight (2.4 lb). It is rated for 24 hours of battery against 14 for the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 lacks. It links with other speakers (Party Connect up to 100 speakers), which the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 cannot. The catch: Not very loud.
The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 is the lighter pick. At 0.9 lbs (420 g) it weighs much less than the Sony XB33 at 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg). The tradeoff: Bass isn’t as deep as the top-ranked speakers and is a little thuddy.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 if price matters most. For better sound quality, the Sony ULT Field 3, the replacement for the discontinued Sony XB33, is rated higher but costs $208.
