The case for the Sony ULT Field 3: IP67 rated, dustproof and water resistant. It has an adjustable EQ, which the JBL Charge Essential lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the JBL Charge Essential. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. The tradeoff: Sounds a bit hollow, a bit boosted in the treble.
The JBL Charge Essential is the lighter option. Doubles as a power bank. At 1.7 lbs (770 g) it weighs noticeably less than the Sony ULT Field 3 at 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg). Watch for: Less clarity than the JBL Flip 4, highs rolled off.
Buy the Sony ULT Field 3. It is rated higher for sound quality; the JBL Charge Essential is no longer sold new.
