Short answer: the Polk Audio XT15. It ranks #51 of 168 bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.7/5, at $149; the Polk T15 ranks #153, rated 1.9/5, at $149. Close enough in price that the sound-quality gap is the deciding factor.
The XT15 fixes the T15’s measured problems for very little extra money. Its preference score is 4.56 against the T15’s 0.34, it holds its tone reasonably well off-axis, and its bass reaches lower, falling 3dB at 77.6Hz against 88.6Hz. It handles 4 or 8 ohm amplifier outputs, so it drops into almost any AV receiver. Its 86dB sensitivity wants a reasonably powerful amp channel.
The T15 has a deep on-axis hole that is hard to work around. Audio Science Review measured a large dip from 3 to 6kHz, likely from the tweeter and woofer cancelling each other straight ahead, plus a distortion peak near 400Hz. It actually measured better 20 degrees above or below the tweeter, so placement matters a lot. In near-field desk use, reflections mask some of the dip.
Buy the Polk Audio XT15. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Polk T15 at the same price, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.

Cons: Bass rolls off early, at 77.6Hz (-3dB) and 54.2Hz (-10dB). On-axis response is relatively uneven, with an average deviation of about 0.45dB, and its listening window is less smooth than pricier speakers. Modest 86dB sensitivity wants a reasonably powered amp channel. The 5.25” bi-laminate paper woofer is Polk’s entry-tier driver, not the polypropylene/Turbine cones used in its pricier Signature Elite/Reserve lines.

Pros: Extremely affordable 2-way design that actually measured better at +/-20 degrees vertical off-axis than directly on-axis. In near-field desktop use, the reviewer found the T15 “didn’t sound that horrible,” partly because nearby desk reflections mask the frequency response dip. Measured bass extension of 88.6Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 89dB.
Cons: Spinorama analysis reveals what Amir called a “horrific drop in upper mids/lower treble region of 3 to 6 kHz,” likely from tweeter-woofer phase cancellation directly on-axis. Measured impedance ranges from 4-8 ohms, contradicting the specified 6-8 ohm range, and there’s a distortion peak around 400Hz. On- and off-axis response “vary a ton,” making listening position unusually important. The reviewer recommends saving up for the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR instead: “I can’t justify recommending the Polk T15 even though subjective performance was not horrible.”
