Short answer: the Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1. It ranks #1 of 178 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 4.7/5); the Philips TAS3160 ranks #140 (rated 2.6/5).
Why pick the Philips TAS3160: A pill shaped waterproof speaker from Philips, also listed as the S3160, with a woofer and separate tweeter on 20W + 10W of amplification. The tradeoff: Oluv, who designs the rival Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1, tested the two side by side and heard a sizzling peak near 10kHz, little real bass and audible distortion by the third volume step, with the outdoor mode harsher still.
The Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1 is the better-sounding pick. A compact speaker tuned for natural, balanced sound and deep bass for its size, with stereo pairing for two units. The catch: A limited-production model available primarily through direct pre-orders rather than retail distribution.
Pre-order: the Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1 is available for pre-order.
Buy the Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Philips TAS3160.
Worth knowing: the Joy&Oluv’Sone sEARius S1 has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 4.5 to 4.9, so treat this verdict as provisional.
