Short answer: the Yamaha True X Speaker 1A, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #121 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 2.8/5) at $150 and is still sold new; the Marshall Emberton ranks #138 (rated 2.6/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The Marshall Emberton’s replacement, the Marshall Emberton III, is rated 2.7/5 at $129.99. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 175 medium speakers; for better sound, the EarFun Uboom L ranks #2 at $49.79.
The Marshall Emberton is the longer-running option. Two full range drivers fire in stereo with a wide, enveloping soundstage, and RTINGS found its mids and treble balanced for clear vocals. It is rated for 20 hours of battery against 12 for the Yamaha True X Speaker 1A. The catch: Little low bass and it does not get very loud.
The Yamaha True X Speaker 1A is the lighter option. Doubles as a wireless surround speaker for Yamaha True X soundbars, or a standalone speaker via ‘Solo’ mode. At 1.1 lbs (500 g) it weighs noticeably less than the Marshall Emberton at 1.5 lbs (700 g). Watch for: Not very deep bass, upper mids peak that makes voices sibilant.
Buy the Yamaha True X Speaker 1A. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Marshall Emberton is discontinued.
Worth knowing: the Marshall Emberton has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 2.4 to 2.9, so treat this verdict as provisional.
