Short answer: the KRK Rokit 5 G4. It ranks #18 of 58 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality at $337; the Edifier S1000MKII ranks #47 and costs $499.99, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh.
What the KRK Rokit 5 G4 offers: Deeper bass than the HS5. Good horizontal directivity - the small woofer mates well with the waveguided tweeter. Distortion is quite low at 86dB SPL and scales gradually with volume rather than breaking up suddenly, tweeter hiss is nearly inaudible, and the onboard DSP/app lets you dial in EQ, including for the 680Hz port resonance. Watch for: Not quite as detailed as the HS5, not as good for mixing. A little more hifi sounding
What the Edifier S1000MKII offers: High resolution digital input up to 192khz/24bit. Very close to the S2000MKIII, almost no reason to pay more Watch for: No independent measurements exist - reviews are limited to informal YouTube sound-comparison videos. As one of Edifier’s warmer-tuned lifestyle HiFi speakers, it isn’t voiced for the flat, neutral response of a measurement-verified monitor.
Buy the KRK Rokit 5 G4. It ranks higher for sound quality than the Edifier S1000MKII and costs less, so there is no real case for the other one.
If sound quality matters at all to you, skip the Edifier S1000MKII. It ranks near the bottom of the 58 powered bookshelf speakers, so look higher up the list instead.
