ASR’s Klippel-based measurements found the R1280T’s woofer, at $149.99 against $319.99, handled a demanding bass-heavy track without bottoming out, with distortion low and inaudible at 86dB SPL. Its on-axis response is still jagged, with a 5kHz woofer resonance and a 10kHz tweeter peak, while the Classic 5 offers soundstage but is more hifi.
What the KRK Classic 5 gets right: Good soundstage. The catch: More hifi than studio monitors.
Buy the KRK Classic 5 if sound quality is the priority over the price, or the Edifier R1280T if the price is the priority over sound quality.

Pros: ASR’s Klippel data gives -3dB bass around 60Hz and a 5.99 preference score with an ideal subwoofer. Broad tonal correction can improve it, so it may be useful to someone willing to measure and EQ a basic studio setup. Measured bass extension of 60.1Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The native standalone score is 3.47 and the midrange span is a large 6.5dB. Excess treble and crossover/directivity errors keep it from being neutral out of the box, while low-bass distortion limits loud playback. Modeled EQ scores are not stock performance and do not demonstrate corrected distortion or dispersion.

Pros: ASR’s review found useful moderate-level bass output from an inexpensive powered pair. Remote volume and bass/treble controls make it easy to use without separate amplification. Measured bass reaches -3dB around 63Hz. Measured bass extension of 63Hz (-3dB).
Cons: Preference scores of 2.41 standalone and 5.02 with an ideal subwoofer reflect substantial tonal limitations, not just missing bass.
