Short answer: the Klipsch The Fives for a living-room setup, the Pioneer DJ VM-50 for a desk. The Fives at $699 bring HDMI ARC, USB, optical, Bluetooth, phono/line RCA and a subwoofer output, though Flat mode is bass-heavy and the 4.5-inch woofer and Tractrix horn transition needs care. The VM-50 at $338 has a 96kHz DSP, 4mm aluminum baffle, 5.25-inch aramid woofer, but its axial response is not reference-flat.
Buy the Klipsch The Fives. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $361 saving on the Pioneer DJ VM-50 is not enough to make up the difference.

The Two Speakers In Full
Klipsch The Fives: $699 per pair Amazon eBay
Pros: In the tested Bass Cut mode, Erin’s Klippel data gives preference scores of 5.52 standalone and 7.89 with an ideal subwoofer, with a 2.7dB midrange response span. That mode offers considerably better tonal balance than the bass-heavy default behavior. HDMI ARC, phono/line input, digital inputs and subwoofer output make it a versatile stereo alternative to a soundbar. Measured bass extension of 57Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The favorable score specifically requires Bass Cut mode; it does not describe every firmware or bass setting. Bass reaches -3dB around 59Hz in that configuration. The review reports increasing compression around 200Hz and below 80Hz as volume rises, reducing bass dynamics. Careful placement and a subwoofer remain useful, and the horn/woofer transition is not perfectly uniform off-axis.

Pioneer DJ VM-50: $338 per pair Amazon eBay
Pros: Erin’s Klippel measurements give scores of 4.64 standalone and 7.00 with an ideal subwoofer, with a -3dB point around 60Hz. The existing review reports low distortion and little sustained compression, supporting practical clean playback beyond what the tonal score alone captures. Separate bass and treble voicings and balanced inputs make adjustment straightforward. Measured bass extension of 61Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The default response spans 3.5dB from 300Hz to 5kHz, and the upper-midrange/treble balance varies with angle. EQ-switch selection and aiming therefore matter. Bass below about 50Hz is reduced, so it is not a full-range substitute for a monitor-and-subwoofer system. Its output evidence supports nearfield use, not unrestricted home-theater levels.
