What the KEF Q3 Meta does well: Coaxial bookshelf speakers with very wide dispersion, punchy kick drums and bass tuning that works close to a wall. The catch: Not well suited to high-output use: compression and strain in the 1-2kHz region emerge above about 90dB at 10 feet, so a high-output home theater setup isn’t the best application.
The GR-Research NX-Studio is the better-sounding option. A DIY kit bookshelf speaker with a ribbon tweeter for wide open, detailed sound, superb imaging, and tight, fast sealed bass. Watch for: Bass will be very tight but won’t be quite as deep as others due to the sealed woofer enclosure.
