JBL Xtreme 5 vs Turtlebox

Last updated: October 14, 2026

Different classes, so treat this as a step-up-or-not question rather than a head-to-head. The JBL Xtreme 5 ranks #2 of 105 large speakers by sound quality at $399.95; the Turtlebox ranks #94 of 99 boombox speakers by sound quality at $329.

JBL Xtreme 5 vs Turtlebox

The JBL Xtreme 5 is the lighter option. Removable battery. At 6.4 lbs (2.9 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the Turtlebox at 10 lbs (4.54 kg). It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Turtlebox lacks. It links with other speakers (Auracast), which the Turtlebox cannot. The catch: High priced.

What the Turtlebox does well: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Xtreme 5 lacks. The tradeoff: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.

One note: the Turtlebox is no longer in production and isn’t widely stocked new anymore. The Turtlebox’s replacement, the Turtlebox Gen 3, is still sold new.

Buy the JBL Xtreme 5 at $399.95 for a large speaker, or the Turtlebox at $329 for a boombox speaker instead.

Older models: the JBL Xtreme 3 (ranked lower, rated 4.3/5), the JBL Xtreme 4 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Xtreme 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.4/5) and the JBL Xtreme (ranked lower, rated 3.2/5). See every JBL Xtreme generation.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.

Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable): needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the JBL Xtreme 4.

Setup: Try this Oluv EQ for the most neutral sound

Turtlebox ranking card

Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5, released Feb 2025. See every Turtlebox generation.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Turtlebox Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
