JBL Xtreme 5 vs Marshall Kilburn III

Last updated: October 3, 2026

Short answer: the JBL Xtreme 5. It ranks #2 of 97 large speakers by sound quality, rated 4.6/5, at $399.95. The Marshall Kilburn III ranks #41, rated 3.8/5, at $379.99, $19.96 cheaper, which does not close the gap in sound quality.

JBL Xtreme 5 vs Marshall Kilburn III

The JBL Xtreme 5 is the better-sounding, tougher pick. Removable battery. It is rated IP68 against IP54 for the Marshall Kilburn III. The tradeoff: High priced.

The Marshall Kilburn III is the longer-running choice. Spacious soundstage with broad stereo dispersion from Marshall’s True Stereophonic multi-driver layout, delivering warm, room-filling sound with 45Hz bass extension. It is rated for 50 hours of battery against 28 for the JBL Xtreme 5. It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Xtreme 5 lacks. The catch: Noticeable dips in the midrange compromise frequency response neutrality, making vocals and acoustic instruments sound somewhat recessed or muffled compared to more linear competitors like the JBL Xtreme 4 unless the bass dial is dialed back.

Buy the JBL Xtreme 5. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $19.96 with the Marshall Kilburn III does not make up for the sound-quality gap.

JBL Xtreme 5 ranking card

Older models: the JBL Xtreme 3 (ranked lower, rated 4.3/5), the JBL Xtreme 4 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Xtreme 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.4/5) and the JBL Xtreme (ranked lower, rated 3.2/5).

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.

Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable): needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.

Setup: Try this Oluv EQ for the most neutral sound

Marshall Kilburn III ranking card

Older model: the Marshall Kilburn II (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5).

Pros: Spacious soundstage with broad stereo dispersion from Marshall’s True Stereophonic multi-driver layout, delivering warm, room-filling sound with 45Hz bass extension. Independent physical bass and treble dials allow quick tonal adjustments on the fly, backed by app-based EQ and placement compensation. Battery life is outstanding at up to 50+ hours with USB-C power-bank charging, IP54 splash resistance, 3.5mm aux input, and Bluetooth 5.3 with Auracast broadcast support. Measured bass extension of 45Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Noticeable dips in the midrange compromise frequency response neutrality, making vocals and acoustic instruments sound somewhat recessed or muffled compared to more linear competitors like the JBL Xtreme 4 unless the bass dial is dialed back. Kilburn II retains slightly punchier perceived loudness at maximum volume due to a more aggressive V-shaped contour. At 2.85 kg with only IP54 splash resistance, it is heavy and cannot withstand water immersion. Lacks a built-in microphone and LDAC codec support.
