JBL Xtreme 5 vs JBL Boombox 3

Different sizes. The Xtreme 5 is a 2.9 kg large speaker. The Boombox 3 is a 6.7 kg boombox. Each is rated within its own class.

The Xtreme 5 is the better sounding speaker. It reaches well below 40Hz with excellent off-axis dispersion and plays clean at volume. It is IP68 with a removable battery, a claimed 28 hours, Auracast and a 7-band app EQ.

The Boombox 3 measured about 110dB, the same as the Xtreme 5, and has an aux input. It is bass boosted with a mid bass dip, has no EQ, and uses the older PartyBoost linking. It is IP67 with a claimed 24 hours.

Buy the JBL Xtreme 5 at $399.95 if you want a large speaker. Buy the JBL Boombox 3 at $399 if you want a boombox speaker instead.

Older models: the JBL Xtreme 3 (rated 4.3/5), the JBL Xtreme 4 (rated 3.8/5), the JBL Xtreme 2 (rated 3.4/5) and the JBL Xtreme (rated 3.2/5).

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.

Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.

Pros: IP67 rated. 24 hour battery life (6.5 hour charge time). Doubles as a power bank. PartyBoost links up to 100 compatible JBL speakers. Three-way speaker system with subwoofer. Measured bass extension of 43Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Dips in mid bass range which makes the bass sound undefined, bass boosted, peaky at 700Hz, not quite as good mids and treble as the Blast.
