Short answer: these are not really competing for the same job. The Partybox Encore 2 ranks #4 of 75 boombox speakers at $330, built as a stationary party unit with included microphones. The Xtreme 5 ranks #2 of 78 large speakers at $399.95, built to actually travel.
The Xtreme 5 is one of the best-reviewed speakers on this site. Our notes call it a fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables, beating the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity, and it reaches well below 40Hz. That performance comes with real tradeoffs: a hole in the mid-upper bass that can’t be EQ’d out, weak default EQ presets that mean it needs a custom EQ to sound its best, and a high price for the category.
The Encore 2’s strengths are practical rather than sonic. Our notes credit its move to dome tweeters over cone tweeters for better off-axis performance than the original Encore, plus slightly deeper bass, less rolled-off highs, and two included wireless microphones for karaoke. Its one real sound complaint is a bit of missing upper bass.
Despite being marketed as the bigger boombox format, the Encore 2 is actually the heavier, less travel-friendly speaker. It weighs 14.1 lbs against the Xtreme 5’s 6.4 lbs, runs on AC power rather than the Xtreme 5’s USB-C charging, and its IPX4 rating only covers splashing versus the Xtreme 5’s IP68 rating for full submersion. The Xtreme 5 also nearly doubles the battery life at 28 hours against 15.
Buy the JBL Partybox Encore 2 if you want a stationary karaoke and party setup with included microphones and don’t need it to travel or survive water exposure.
Buy the JBL Xtreme 5 if you want a speaker that actually leaves the house: it is lighter, tougher, longer-lasting on a charge, and rated as the better-sounding speaker overall.

Pros: The Encore 2 improves the original with dome tweeters, a less boomy balance, slightly deeper bass, longer battery life and two included wireless microphones. Its compact karaoke-ready design and 7-band EQ make it more adaptable indoors than the earlier Encore.
Cons: It still lacks some upper-bass punch and cannot match the scale of the larger PartyBoxes. The main value is compact karaoke convenience rather than full-range party output.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.
