Short answer: the JBL L100 Classic MKII. It ranks #88 of 188 bookshelf speakers by sound quality (rated 3.9/5) at $5,599.90 and is still sold new; the JBL L100 Classic ranks #112 (rated 3.7/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used.
What the JBL L100 Classic MKII does well: A high-output modern version of JBL’s iconic 1970s monitor, with a 12-inch woofer, dedicated midrange and adjustable mid/treble level controls. The catch: The response has a moderate -0.30dB-per-octave downward tilt and the bass alignment is somewhat resonant at Q 1.64.
The case for the JBL L100 Classic: A large three-way bookshelf speaker with a 12” pulp cone woofer, a 5.25” polymer-coated midrange, a 1” titanium dome tweeter and front panel level controls for the midrange and treble. The tradeoff: Those measurements stop at 200Hz, so it has no preference score; the rating is estimated from that data and its measured successor, the L100 Classic MkII.
Buy the JBL L100 Classic MKII. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the JBL L100 Classic is discontinued.
About the ratings: the JBL L100 Classic’s rating is estimated from measured siblings and predecessors rather than its own measurements, with a likely range of 3.4 to 4.0, so this verdict could change once it is measured.
