JBL HDI-1600 vs Definitive Technology Demand D11

Last updated: August 18, 2026

Short answer: the JBL HDI-1600 for better sound quality, the Definitive Technology Demand D11 for the lower price. The JBL HDI-1600 ranks #35 of 100 bookshelf speakers at $1980. The Definitive Technology Demand D11 ranks #44 at $999, $981 cheaper.

On the JBL HDI-1600 side: CEA2034 spinorama is very flat in the critical mid-to-upper frequencies, with a slight bass boost that should have a good subjective effect and very smooth early-window directivity. Set against that: A dip appears above 10kHz on-axis.

The case for the Definitive Technology Demand D11: CEA2034 spinorama shows a mostly flat, well-controlled response - close to class-leading if not for one narrow resonance. The tradeoff: A narrow but real ~600Hz jaggy shows up consistently in on-axis and off-axis measurements.

Buy the JBL HDI-1600 if sound quality matters more than the price. Buy the Definitive Technology Demand D11 if the price matters more than sound quality.

Pros: CEA2034 spinorama is very flat in the critical mid-to-upper frequencies, with a slight bass boost that should have a good subjective effect and very smooth early-window directivity. Predicted in-room response in a simulated average listening room closely tracks the reviewer’s own preferred target curve.

Cons: A dip appears above 10kHz on-axis. Cumulative spectral decay (waterfall) shows some messiness around the crossover along with a 700Hz resonance. Harmonic distortion rises to nearly 2% right at the 1.9kHz crossover point at 96dB SPL/1m. Discontinued.

Definitive Technology Demand D11 ranking card

Pros: CEA2034 spinorama shows a mostly flat, well-controlled response - close to class-leading if not for one narrow resonance. Distortion is well controlled and the deep cabinet lets it play loud without bottoming out except on the deepest bass content. Cabinet construction and finish are a clear step above budget speakers.

Cons: A narrow but real ~600Hz jaggy shows up consistently in on-axis and off-axis measurements. Horizontal directivity is uneven because of the offset tweeter position, giving the left and right channels slightly different off-axis energy. There’s a low-frequency rattle/noise at very deep bass levels the reviewer called “horrendous.” Discontinued; the Demand series has moved on to newer models. Discontinued.
