Short answer: the JBL Flip 7, if you are buying new. The JBL Flip 5 ranks higher than the KEF Muo gen2 (#81 vs #97 of 175 medium speakers) but is discontinued; its replacement, the JBL Flip 7, is rated 4.2/5 at $89.95 and is still sold new.

The JBL Flip 5 is the lighter pick. Compact and light (1.1 lb) with a carry lanyard. At 1.2 lbs (540 g) it weighs noticeably less than the KEF Muo gen2 at 1.6 lbs (740 g). The catch: Boosted upper bass.

The KEF Muo gen2 is the longer-running choice. KEF seemed to have fixed the rolled off treble and overall balance. It is rated for 24 hours of battery against 12 for the JBL Flip 5. It supports aptX Adaptive Bluetooth, which the JBL Flip 5 lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the JBL Flip 5. The tradeoff: Lacking deeper bass.

Buy the JBL Flip 7, the replacement for the discontinued JBL Flip 5; it is rated higher for sound quality than the KEF Muo gen2.

Cons: Not stereo. Boosted upper bass. Piercing sound when turned up. Peaky lower treble at higher volumes. Discontinued.

Pros: KEF seemed to have fixed the rolled off treble and overall balance

Cons: Lacking deeper bass. Very thuddy bass. Appears to be the exact same hardware but with updated tuning. Bass distorts as volume increases, and the claimed 43Hz extension is really only audible at low listening volumes, with a few seconds of lag after volume changes. Loses most of its bass off-axis. Customer reviews are mixed, ranging from praise for detail at low volume to complaints of a boxy, hollow sound.
