Short answer: the Vifa City for better sound quality, the JBL Clip 5 for the lower price. The Vifa City ranks #10 of 47 small speakers at $106. The JBL Clip 5 ranks #21 at $69.95, $36.05 cheaper.
What the JBL Clip 5 offers: JBL Portable app adds custom EQ. Wider carabiner and thicker back padding than the Clip 4. The tradeoff: Generally more of the same from the Clip series in terms of sound but with more features.
What the Vifa City gets right: Quite detailed. Balanced, controlled sound with clear vocals even at low volume rather than a bass-forward ‘boombox’ voicing. Watch for: Dip at 1200hz. Doesn’t boost bass at low levels. Not that deep of bass.
Buy the JBL Clip 5 if the price matters more than sound quality. Buy the Vifa City if sound quality matters more than the price.
If water resistance matters to you, the JBL Clip 5 at IP67 (brief submersion) holds up far better than the Vifa City at IPX4 (splashing).
