Short answer: the JBL Clip 4. It ranks #23 of 59 small speakers by sound quality (rated 3.4/5) at $49.95 and is still sold new; the JBL Clip 2 ranks #47 (rated 2.7/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The JBL Clip 2’s replacement, the JBL Clip 5, is rated 3.4/5.
The JBL Clip 2 is the lighter pick. Clear vocals and midrange for its size, which Tom’s Guide and Expert Reviews both praised, with IPX7 waterproofing, an aux input and a built-in carabiner. At 0.4 lbs (184 g) it weighs noticeably less than the JBL Clip 4 at 0.5 lbs (239 g). It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Clip 4 lacks. Watch for: Listeners found it thinner and quieter than the Bose Soundlink Micro, and Tom’s Guide measured it topping out around 80dB.
The JBL Clip 4 is the better-sounding pick. Very light (0.4 lb) with a sturdy spring clip that attaches to bags/belts. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. The tradeoff: Quite a lack of bass.
Buy the JBL Clip 4. It is rated higher for sound quality; the JBL Clip 2 is no longer sold new.
