Bass extension and build both favor the Essential 2. It reaches roughly 55Hz at -10dB against the Charge 3’s 63Hz, and its pros describe it as delivering much of the Charge 5’s familiar punch and volume in a simpler package. The Charge 3’s own cons cite less clarity than the Flip 4 and note that battery failures are common on units still in circulation, a real risk when buying a discontinued speaker secondhand.
The Charge 3 actually has the more complete feature set on paper. It includes JBL Connect app support, Connect+ party pairing for up to 100 speakers, an aux input, and a built-in noise and echo-cancelling speakerphone microphone, none of which the Essential 2 offers. The Essential 2 strips all of that out: no app, no EQ, no party mode, and no stereo pairing, trading features for updated hardware like USB-C charging and a stronger 40W output against the Charge 3’s 20W RMS.
Buy the JBL Charge Essential 2 for the deeper bass, modern USB-C charging, and the fact that it’s the speaker JBL still sells and supports.
Buy the JBL Charge 3 only if you find one secondhand for a steep discount and specifically want the party-pairing and speakerphone features the Essential 2 dropped, keeping in mind the battery reliability concerns noted in its own review.

It delivers much of the JBL Charge 5’s familiar punch and volume in a simpler package, with bass that reaches roughly 55Hz for this size. Measured bass extension of ~55Hz (-10dB).
Cons: It is a pared-back Charge: no app EQ, no PartyBoost/party mode and no stereo-pair option. It plays mono, has a little less bass authority than the JBL Charge 5, and its IPX7 rating does not promise dust protection. Choose it for a good sale price, not for extra features.
