JBL Boombox 4 vs Zealot ZE41

Short answer: the Zealot ZE41, and this isn’t a close call on value. These rank #16 and #13 out of 68 boombox speakers - the cheaper one ranks higher - at $549.95 and $299.90.

Our own notes call the Boombox 4 “pretty overpriced for the category.” It measures better than its predecessor mostly because it has 7 EQ bands instead of 3, letting it be tuned properly - but its out-of-the-box sound is worse than the Boombox 3 it replaced, and it dropped the aux input entirely. You are paying a premium largely for the JBL name and Auracast pairing with the wider JBL range.

The ZE41 is described in our notes as the best value in the entire boombox class for bass performance, play time, and max volume combined. It earns that with real compromises: it’s the heaviest and biggest boombox here, a little rolled off up top, and its bass EQ runs bloated and muddy without correction.

What the Boombox 4 buys you specifically: IP68 against IPX5 (meaningfully better dust and water protection), a lighter cabinet at 5.98 kg against 11.48 kg, and Auracast multi-speaker pairing with other current JBL products.

Buy the ZE41 for bass and value - it beats the JBL on both while costing nearly half as much. Buy the Boombox 4 only if you specifically need Auracast pairing with existing JBL speakers, better weather sealing, or a lighter, more portable cabinet.

Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size.

Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.

Pros: The absolute best value for the bass performance, play time and max volume in the boombox class.

Cons: The heaviest and biggest boombox speaker around. A little rolled off up top and not that balanced through the rest of the range. Clarity isn’t as good as better speakers. Bass EQ is bloated and muddy sounding.
