Short answer: it depends on what you’re optimizing for. The JBL Boombox 4 ranks #19 of 75 boombox speakers at $549.95; the W-King X20 ranks #30 at $219.98, $329.97 less. Neither speaker is a clean win.

JBL Boombox 4 vs W-King X20

The Boombox 4’s own cons are unusually blunt. They call it pretty overpriced for the category and state it sounds worse out of the box than the Boombox 3 it replaced, with the gain coming mainly from having 7 EQ bands instead of 3 so it can be tuned to compensate. Multiple reviewers, including JOY’s 3D Audio-Show and Alan Ross Reviews, published direct Boombox 4 vs Boombox 3 comparisons asking whether it’s actually an improvement. Its pros do note pretty insane output capability for the size, backed by a 41Hz bass extension and 115dB max volume.

The W-King X20 packs a lot of feature for the price. Its pros list 200W RMS output with 330W peak, a 112dB max volume, a 7.5 inch subwoofer, MicroSD and USB playback, an AUX input, and 24-hour battery life with a power bank function. Its one noted flaw is a rising frequency response with the upper treble rolled off and peaks around 700Hz and 1.2kHz.

What the Boombox 4 offers that the X20 does not: a higher IP68 rating against IPX6, Auracast multi-speaker pairing, and a removable battery. The X20 counters with an AUX input, MicroSD and USB playback, and a lower weight relative to its bass output despite being physically heavier overall.

Buy the JBL Boombox 4 if you want the higher-ranked speaker and are willing to spend time in the EQ app to get it sounding its best.

Buy the W-King X20 if you want more raw output, an AUX input, and local file playback for $329.97 less.

Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.
