The Boombox 4 brings real output and tuning flexibility. Our notes describe pretty insane output capability for its size, backed by 7-band EQ, up from the Boombox 3’s 3 bands, so it can be tuned more precisely. The catch is that it’s overpriced for the category, drops Aux input entirely, and actually sounds worse than the Boombox 3 out of the box before EQ is applied.
The Turtlebox trades sound quality for durability and battery life. It’s rated waterproof and crushproof with loud, punchy bass, plus a 25-hour battery rating against the Boombox 4’s 28 hours. But its cons are blunt: each Turtlebox generation, including the later Gen 2 and Gen 3, mainly added features rather than actual sound quality, and it charges over an external AC power brick rather than USB-C.
Everything else favors the Boombox 4: a companion app, party mode via Auracast, a removable battery, USB-C power bank output up to 30W, and a higher IP68 rating against the Turtlebox’s IP67.
Buy the Boombox 4 if sound quality and output are the priority and the price doesn’t bother you.
Buy the Turtlebox if the lower price and rugged, waterproof build matter more to you than refined sound.

Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. IP68 protection and Auracast pairing with other current JBL speakers. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.

Turtlebox: $329 Discontinued eBay
Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5.
Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
