JBL Boombox 4 vs LG xboom Blast

The case for the JBL Boombox 4: Pretty insane output capability for the size. Watch for: Pretty overpriced for the category.

Why pick the LG xboom Blast: Bench tests confirm its 220 watt rating, with two 5.25 inch woofers and Peerless tweeters that play louder than the JBL Boombox 4 in side by side outdoor tests. The catch: No measurements, so its rating is estimated from listening tests.

Buy the JBL Boombox 4. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $49.95 with the LG xboom Blast does not make up for the sound-quality gap.

Worth knowing: the LG xboom Blast has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 3.4 to 4.1, so treat this verdict as provisional.

Older models: the JBL Boombox 3 Wifi (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Boombox 3 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Boombox 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.5/5) and the JBL Boombox (ranked lower, rated 2.9/5). See every JBL Boombox generation.

Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. IP68 protection and Auracast pairing with other current JBL speakers. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the JBL Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the JBL Boombox 3. No Aux input.

LG xboom Blast ranking card

Pros: Bench tests confirm its 220 watt rating, with two 5.25 inch woofers and Peerless tweeters that play louder than the JBL Boombox 4 in side by side outdoor tests. Rated for 36 hours from a removable 99 Wh battery, IP68 dust and water protection, USB-C lossless wired playback, Auracast linking and a six band app EQ that reaches lower than JBL’s.

Cons: No measurements, so its rating is estimated from listening tests. The default bass boost causes audible muddiness at high volume, and like other two way boomboxes it compresses and trims bass when pushed. No analog aux input, and at about 6.4 kg and $500 it costs and weighs as much as the JBL Boombox 4.
