Short answer: these are not really competing for the same buyer. The Boombox 4 ranks #20 of 7 boombox speakers, while the Authentics 500 ranks #4 of a much smaller field of powered desktop speakers. Treat this as a step-up-or-sideways question rather than a straight head-to-head.
The Boombox 4 is built for portability and abuse. It runs on a removable battery rated for 28 hours, carries an IP68 rating for extended submersion, and its own notes call out pretty insane output capability for its size. The catch is that it drops the Aux input entirely and, according to its cons, actually sounds worse than the Boombox 3 out of the box until you dial in its 7 band EQ.
The Authentics 500 is built to sit in one place and stream. It has no battery at all, but adds an Aux input, Ethernet, WiFi, and support for AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and simultaneous Alexa and Google Assistant. Its pros call out quite powerful sound and quite deep bass for its size, though its cons note boosted upper bass and peaky upper mids.
Everything else diverges by design: the Authentics 500’s 3.1 channel layout with a down-firing subwoofer, three midranges, and three tweeters is built for a stationary living room setup, while the Boombox 4’s dual woofer and tweeter layout with passive radiators and a carry handle is built to travel.
Buy the JBL Boombox 4 if you need something waterproof and battery powered that you can take outside or to the beach.
Buy the JBL Authentics 500 if it will live permanently on a shelf and you want WiFi streaming and voice assistants built in.
There is a real gap in water resistance: the JBL Boombox 4 at IP68 (extended submersion) against the JBL Authentics 500, which has no water resistance.

Older models: the JBL Boombox 3 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Boombox 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.5/5) and the JBL Boombox (ranked lower, rated 2.9/5).
Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. IP68 protection and Auracast pairing with other current JBL speakers. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.
