JBL Boombox 4 vs ION Pathfinder 280

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Short answer: the JBL Boombox 4 for sound; the ION Pathfinder 280 for battery life and coverage. The JBL has pretty insane output for its size with a 7-band EQ, but it is overpriced, sounds worse than the Boombox 3 out of the box and drops the aux input. The ION runs about 68 hours at moderate-high volume and spreads 280° of sound, but its bass is shallow, it is very heavy and its water rating is poor.

JBL Boombox 4 vs ION Pathfinder 280

Buy the JBL Boombox 4. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $379.96 saving on the ION Pathfinder 280 is not enough to make up the difference.

Battery life favors the ION Pathfinder 280: rated for 100 hours against 28 hours for the JBL Boombox 4.

There is a real gap in water resistance: the JBL Boombox 4 at IP68 (extended submersion) against the ION Pathfinder 280, which has IPX5 (water jets).

JBL Boombox 4 ranking card

Older models: the JBL Boombox 3 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Boombox 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.5/5) and the JBL Boombox (ranked lower, rated 2.9/5).

Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. IP68 protection and Auracast pairing with other current JBL speakers. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.

ION Pathfinder 280 ranking card

Pros: A practical all-day event speaker with an exceptionally long claimed 68-hour battery, wheels, telescoping handle, FM radio, lighting and a full graphic EQ/presets. RTINGS finds it gets loud with relatively little compression, and its wide dispersion makes it a useful choice for outdoor background music or casual gatherings. Measured bass extension of 58Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers. It is heavy, only IPX5 splash-resistant, and cannot produce a true stereo image from one cabinet. Use the EQ before judging its sound.
