Short answer: these aren’t really competing for the same job. The Authentics 500 is $600 and has no battery at all; the Boombox 3 is $399, runs 24 hours on battery, and survives full submersion. Picking between them is really picking a use case first.
The Authentics 500 is JBL’s home lifestyle line. It ranks #3 of 5 in its powered desktop category, a small field, with 270W of output and genuinely deep bass for its size. It plugs into a wall and stays there. Its cons are typical JBL house tuning: boosted upper bass and peaky upper mids.
The Boombox 3 is built to leave the house. It ranks #21 of 71 portable boombox speakers, doubles as a USB power bank, and links up to 100 compatible JBL speakers over PartyBoost. Its own weak points are dips in the mid bass and a peak at 700 Hz that our notes say hold it back from the Stormbox Blast’s mids and treble.
Price aside, the decision is really about batteries and water. If it’s staying on a shelf near an outlet, the Authentics 500’s extra output and cleaner design make sense. If it needs to survive a pool deck or a yard, only the Boombox 3 is built for that.
Buy the Authentics 500 for a stationary home speaker with real output. Buy the Boombox 3 if you need it to run on battery, get wet, and travel.

Pros: IP67 rated. 24 hour battery life (6.5 hour charge time). Doubles as a power bank. PartyBoost links up to 100 compatible JBL speakers. Three-way speaker system with subwoofer.
Cons: Dips in mid bass range which makes the bass sound undefined, bass boosted, peaky at 700hz, not quite as good mids and treble as the Blast.
