Short answer: these two aren’t really the same kind of speaker, so the choice comes down to how you’ll use it. The Authentics 200 ranks #9 of 21 powered desktop speakers at $199.95; the Authentics 300 ranks #41 of 91 boombox speakers at $299.95.
The 200 is a plug-in speaker, the 300 is a portable one. The Authentics 200 has no battery at all and needs to stay near an outlet, while the Authentics 300 runs about 8 hours cordless and adds a carrying handle. If you need to move it around the house or take it outside, that alone settles the decision toward the 300.
But the 200 is the better-reviewed speaker of the pair. Its pros text describes “well balanced sound” and notes it measured about 113dB at max volume, matching the larger 300 despite a smaller cabinet. The Authentics 300’s own cons are more numerous: narrow-sounding, peaky upper mids, and bass that isn’t as deep as its rivals, on top of complaints both models share (no TWS, no IP rating, not as loud as class leaders).
Both integrate Alexa and Google Assistant simultaneously, which JBL’s own pros text for each calls rare among smart speakers, and both support JBL’s Wi-Fi multi-room party mode for linking with other JBL Wi-Fi speakers.
Driver layout differs too: the 200 uses a 5-inch full-range woofer with two 25mm tweeters and a 6-inch down-firing passive radiator, while the 300 uses a single 4-inch woofer, a 1-inch tweeter, and its own passive radiators in that retro seventies-styled cabinet with leather trim and a Quadrex grille.
Buy the JBL Authentics 200 if you want the better-measured sound and don’t need to move the speaker away from an outlet.
Buy the JBL Authentics 300 if portability and battery power matter more than squeezing out the last bit of sound quality, and you like the retro leather-and-grille design.
