Short answer: the ION Trailblazer Summit, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #85 of 98 boombox speakers by sound quality (rated 2.4/5) at $89.99 and is still sold new; the Turtlebox ranks #94 (rated 2.1/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The Turtlebox’s replacement, the Turtlebox Gen 3, is rated 2.1/5 at $430. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 98 boombox speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Blast ranks #2 at $199.99.
The ION Trailblazer Summit is the lighter pick. A rugged, weather resistant speaker with rubber corner guards that is far lighter to carry than the Turtlebox, at 7.1 lbs (3.2 kg). At 7.1 lbs (3.2 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the Turtlebox at 10 lbs (4.54 kg). It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox lacks. The tradeoff: No independent reviews or measurements yet, so its rating is estimated from ION’s similar speakers.
The Turtlebox is the longer-running, tougher option. Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 10 for the ION Trailblazer Summit. It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Trailblazer Summit. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the ION Trailblazer Summit. The catch: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
Buy the ION Trailblazer Summit. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the Turtlebox is discontinued, so it is only available used.
Worth knowing: the ION Trailblazer Summit has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 2.0 to 2.8, so treat this verdict as provisional.

The Two Speakers In Full
ION Trailblazer Summit: $89.99 Estimated Amazon $89.99 eBay
Pros: A rugged, weather resistant speaker with rubber corner guards that is far lighter to carry than the Turtlebox, at 3.2 kg. It has a microphone input with gain control, aux input, USB playback, FM radio, app EQ, stereo linking with a second unit and a USB port for charging a phone.
Cons: No independent reviews or measurements yet, so its rating is estimated from ION’s similar speakers. A single woofer and tweeter means no stereo from one unit, the rated battery is only about 10 hours, and IPX5 protects against splashes but not submersion.

Turtlebox: $329 Discontinued eBay
Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5, released Feb 2025. See every Turtlebox generation.
Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Turtlebox Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
