Short answer: the ION Trailblazer Summit, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #88 of 105 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 2.4/5, at $89.99; the Turtlebox Gen 3 ranks #97, rated 2.1/5, and costs $430, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 105 boombox speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Blast ranks #2 at $179.99.
The ION Trailblazer Summit is the lighter option. A rugged, weather resistant speaker with rubber corner guards that is far lighter to carry than the Turtlebox, at 7.1 lbs (3.2 kg). At 7.1 lbs (3.2 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the Turtlebox Gen 3 at 10 lbs (4.54 kg). It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox Gen 3 lacks. The catch: No independent reviews or measurements yet, so its rating is estimated from ION’s similar speakers.
The Turtlebox Gen 3 is the longer-running, tougher choice. Waterproof (IP67, and it floats) and crushproof, with stainless steel hardware and quality amplifier parts inside. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 10 for the ION Trailblazer Summit. It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Trailblazer Summit. It links with other speakers (Turtlebox Party Mode), which the ION Trailblazer Summit cannot. The tradeoff: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Turtlebox Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
Buy the ION Trailblazer Summit. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Turtlebox Gen 3 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
