The ION Tailgater TD is the lighter option. A rugged IPX5 speaker with a 5.25 inch woofer and 2 inch tweeter at 7.1 lbs (3.24 kg), lighter than the ION Tailgater Classic. At 7.1 lbs (3.24 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the Turtlebox Gen 3 at 10 lbs (4.54 kg). It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox Gen 3 lacks. Watch for: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked boomboxes like the Tribit Stormbox Blast and Harman Kardon Go + Play 3, which reach down to about 43 Hz and 35 Hz.
The Turtlebox Gen 3 is the longer-running, tougher choice. Waterproof (IP67, and it floats) and crushproof, with stainless steel hardware and quality amplifier parts inside. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 10 for the ION Tailgater TD. It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Tailgater TD. It links with other speakers (Turtlebox Party Mode), which the ION Tailgater TD cannot. The catch: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Turtlebox Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
Buy the ION Tailgater TD. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Turtlebox Gen 3 and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.
