Short answer: the ION Pathfinder 320, though neither ranks well in its class. Both are rated 2.2/5 for sound quality (#82 and #83 of 91 boombox speakers), and the ION Pathfinder 320 costs $129.99 against $169.99 for the ION Pathfinder 280, so with nothing between them on sound quality, price settles it. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 91 boombox speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Blast ranks #2 at $179.99.
The case for the ION Pathfinder 280: A practical all-day event speaker with an exceptionally long claimed 68-hour battery, wheels, telescoping handle, FM radio, lighting and a full graphic EQ/presets. The catch: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Why pick the ION Pathfinder 320: 100 hour battery at low-moderate volume. Watch for: Bass is not as deep as competitors.
Buy the ION Pathfinder 320. Both are rated the same for sound quality, and it costs $40 less than the ION Pathfinder 280.

The Two Speakers In Full
ION Pathfinder 280: $169.99 Amazon eBay
Pros: A practical all-day event speaker with an exceptionally long claimed 68-hour battery, wheels, telescoping handle, FM radio, lighting and a full graphic EQ/presets. RTINGS finds it gets loud with relatively little compression, and its wide dispersion makes it a useful choice for outdoor background music or casual gatherings. Measured bass extension of 58Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers. It is heavy, only IPX5 splash-resistant, and cannot produce a true stereo image from one cabinet. Use the EQ before judging its sound.
