The two generations trade bass depth for a different tonal balance. The Studio 8’s pros describe a “warm sound with boosted bass,” and its bass extension reaches down to 35Hz. The Studio 9’s own cons admit “not as deep bass as previous Onyx Studio speakers” (its extension is 41Hz) along with “slight recessed mids, boost in the upper mids, rolled off upper treble.” If a warm, bass-forward sound is what you want, the Studio 8 delivers it more directly; if you want more volume headroom, the Studio 9’s cons don’t mention loudness as a weak point the way the Studio 8’s do.
Loudness favors the newer model. The Studio 8’s own cons state it’s “not as loud as others” in its class, with a 96dB max volume rating, while the Studio 9 reaches 101dB.

Buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 8 if you want the warmer, deeper-bass sound signature and don’t need Auracast or extra volume headroom.
Buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 9 if you want Auracast multi-speaker linking and a bit more max volume, and can accept a slightly thinner bass response and recessed mids in exchange.
