The Onyx Studio 7 leans warm, the Onyx Studio 9 leans a little thinner up top. The Onyx 7’s pros call out warm sound with boosted bass, and it reaches down to 37Hz versus 41Hz for the Onyx 9. The tradeoff is that the Onyx 7 sounds a little sterile according to its own notes, while the Onyx 9’s cons list a slight recess in the mids, a boost in the upper mids, and rolled off upper treble, plus not as much deep bass as previous Onyx Studio speakers. Neither is a clean win on sound alone.
What the Onyx Studio 9 adds:
- Auracast multi-speaker connection alongside classic stereo pairing, where the Onyx 7 only offers Harman’s older Wireless Dual Sound pairing.

What the Onyx Studio 7 keeps that the 9 does not: a built in microphone for calls, and a slightly lighter 6.4 lbs (2.9 kg) body versus 9.3 lbs (4.2 kg) for the Onyx 9.
Buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 if warm, bass forward sound matters more to you than app control or Auracast.
Buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 9 if you want app EQ, Auracast pairing, and USB-C charging, and can live with a slightly thinner top end for $63.91 less.
