Harbeth M30.3 XD2 vs Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Short answer: the Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2. It ranks #179 of 216 bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.1/5, at $7,990. The Harbeth M30.3 XD2 ranks #190, rated 2.8/5, at $6,290, $1,700 cheaper, which does not close the gap in sound quality.

Harbeth M30.3 XD2 vs Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2

The case for the Harbeth M30.3 XD2: The current version of the Harbeth Monitor 30, with an 8” (200mm) RADIAL4 mid/bass driver made by Harbeth and a 1” ferrofluid cooled tweeter in a compact front ported cabinet. The tradeoff: No independent measurements have been published for this version, so its linearity, directivity and real bass extension are unknown.

The Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2 is the better-sounding choice. A large three way stand mount with an 8 inch RADIAL4 mid/bass and a separate super tweeter, rated to 40Hz; Stereophile measured the previous XD version with an impressively even 30 degree listening window and a port tuned to 29Hz for deep bass extension. The catch: Expensive at about $7,990 a pair, and at 86dB sensitivity with equivalent load dips to about 2.5 ohms it wants a capable amplifier.

Buy the Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $1,700 with the Harbeth M30.3 XD2 does not make up for the sound-quality gap.

About the ratings: neither speaker has been measured yet, so both ratings are estimated from measured siblings and predecessors (likely ranges: Harbeth M30.3 XD2 2.4 to 3.2; Harbeth Super HL5plus XD2 2.8 to 3.4). Treat this verdict as provisional.

Older model: the Harbeth Monitor 30 (ranked lower, rated 2.5/5). See every Harbeth Monitor 30 generation.

Pros: The current version of the Harbeth Monitor 30, with an 8” (200mm) RADIAL4 mid/bass driver made by Harbeth and a 1” ferrofluid cooled tweeter in a compact front ported cabinet. Harbeth rates it at 50Hz to 20kHz within 3dB in free space with the grille on, and a 6 ohm load that it describes as easy to drive, with amplifiers from 25W per channel suggested. Handmade in England and offered in five real wood veneer finishes.

Cons: No independent measurements have been published for this version, so its linearity, directivity and real bass extension are unknown. The older Harbeth Monitor 30 measured with a deep on axis dip around the crossover region, and it isn’t known whether this revision changes that. Sensitivity is a modest 85dB at 2.83V, and the 50Hz lower limit means most rooms will want a subwoofer for deep bass. Harbeth tunes it for placement away from walls, and it costs far more than most 2 way standmounts.

Pros: A large three way stand mount with an 8 inch RADIAL4 mid/bass and a separate super tweeter, rated to 40Hz; Stereophile measured the previous XD version with an impressively even 30 degree listening window and a port tuned to 29Hz for deep bass extension. The cabinet showed only low level resonances, and the 6 ohm load is benign in magnitude.

Cons: Expensive at about $7,990 a pair, and at 86dB sensitivity with equivalent load dips to about 2.5 ohms it wants a capable amplifier. Measurements of the previous version showed presence region energy falling away off axis and narrowing treble above 7kHz, so the reflected sound is less even than the direct sound; the XD2 itself has not been independently measured.
