Focal Alpha 65 EVO vs Yamaha HS8

Last updated: September 3, 2026

Short answer: the Alpha 65 EVO, on both ranking and price. It ranks #49 of 66 powered bookshelf speakers at $499; the HS8 ranks #24 at $678.28, $179.28 more.

Our notes describe the Alpha 65 EVO as very neutral, with better soundstage and instrument definition than the HS8, just not quite matching the APS Klasik 2020 in the midrange. Its real quirks are trim dials without a center detent, meaning getting back to flat takes trial and error, plus a distortion spike one reviewer’s original sample showed that a second sample didn’t reproduce, likely a defective unit rather than a design flaw.

The HS8 stays the more conventional, higher-headroom choice, good for mixing with a neutral output, at the cost of a slight midrange boost and its price.

Buy the Alpha 65 EVO for the better ranking and the lower price. Buy the HS8 if you’d rather avoid the trim-dial fiddling.

Focal Alpha 65 EVO ranking card

Pros: ASR measured 42.5Hz -3dB extension, providing useful low-end reach for music. Analog input options and tonal controls make it straightforward to integrate into a studio, with a 5.71 ideal-subwoofer score indicating respectable but not leading tonality.

Cons: The measured 2.7dB response span from 300Hz to 5kHz and listening-window variation do not support a claim of reference-level neutrality. Placement and external correction may help. An anomalous distortion result from an individual sample should not be treated as a proven defect in every unit.

Pros: ASR measurements support broadly neutral sound: a 2.3dB response span from 300Hz to 5kHz and 6.68 ideal-subwoofer score. Measured -3dB bass extension of 43.9Hz gives useful weight for music, with straightforward analog connections and room-adjustment controls.

Cons: Its response and off-axis behavior are not as refined as the leading monitors. Vertical positioning around the crossover matters, and a subwoofer remains useful for deep bass. Basic rear-panel controls do not replace measured room correction.
