Short answer: the Wharfedale Aura 2 for better sound quality, the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 for the lower price. The Wharfedale Aura 2 ranks #13 of 222 bookshelf speakers, rated 4.6/5, at $2,799. The ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 ranks #149, rated 3.5/5, at $329, $2,470 cheaper.
The case for the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2: Large bookshelf speakers that play very loud with low distortion and decent bass, a solid budget choice. The tradeoff: A good size resonant peak around 700Hz stands out from an otherwise smooth response and lingers in cumulative spectral decay (waterfall) measurements: in one reviewer’s sighted A/B test, reducing it by about 5dB via EQ made a noticeable but not dramatic difference.
The Wharfedale Aura 2 is the more accurate, deeper-bass pick. A mini tower style bookshelf speaker with nearly flat response, huge clean output, wide sound, and bass that reaches deep in most rooms. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 6.03 against 4.75 for the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2. Its bass reaches about 56Hz before falling 3dB, against 64Hz for the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2. The catch: A breakup/peak around 13kHz can sound sharp or shrill depending on the track, the main tonal flaw noted.
Buy the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 when the price outweighs sound quality for you, and the Wharfedale Aura 2 when sound quality outweighs the price instead.
