Short answer: the Edifier S2000MKIII. It ranks #71 of 108 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.5/5, at $594.98. The Edifier MR5 ranks #78, rated 3.3/5, at $349.99, $244.99 cheaper, not enough of a saving to outweigh the sound-quality gap.
The S2000MKIII is the larger hi-fi pair with deeper bass. Its 5.5-inch woofers reach an estimated 41Hz before falling 3dB, and it has digital inputs up to 192kHz/24-bit and aptX HD. Its 4.0dB midrange span and uneven predicted room response point to some coloration.
The MR5 is a three-way studio monitor with more inputs. Each speaker has a 5-inch woofer, a 3.75-inch midrange and a silk tweeter, reaching 51Hz before falling 3dB in Erin’s tests, and it adds balanced XLR and TRS, LDAC, an app EQ and a headphone output. Its upper mids and treble are uneven, and it compresses at high levels.
Buy the Edifier S2000MKIII. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $244.99 saving on the Edifier MR5 is not enough to make up the difference.
