Short answer: it depends which flagship you’re chasing a discount from. The R2850DB is $424.99 and our notes call it shockingly close to the Yamaha HS8 at half that speaker’s price. The S1000MKII is $399.99 and is described as very close to the pricier Edifier S2000MKIII, with almost no reason to pay more for that model instead.
The R2850DB is the bigger, bassier option. A genuine 3-way design that trades the HS8’s neutrality for a deeper, more fun-leaning sound, at the cost of being quite large and heavy at 23 kg.
The S1000MKII is the higher-resolution option. It accepts a digital input up to 192kHz/24bit, the same feature its pricier S2000MKIII sibling offers, without the added cost.
Both are Edifier’s answer to a simple pattern: buy the cheaper model in the pair. Our own notes make that case explicitly for the S1000MKII against the S2000MKIII, and implicitly for the R2850DB against the HS8.
Buy the R2850DB if you want a bigger, warmer 3-way sound and have the space for it. Buy the S1000MKII if high-resolution digital input matters and you don’t need the R2850DB’s extra size and bass.
